Charles Elwood "Chuck" Yeager (born 1923), a decorated World War II ace and Air Force officer, was the first person to break the sound "barrier" by flying an aircraft faster than the speed of sound. Chuck Yeager was born in Myra and attended high school in Hamlin, West Virginia.
